Review of City
EmpiresFrom MMOHUB
City Empires is a free web-based
city/empire simulation Mass Multiplayer Online Game (MMO) where players act as
mayor of their own growing city. After a major world conflict, fought years
before, that saw much of the world left in ruins and few people left standing,
you have been chosen by the few people that have gathered around you to lead
them into a stable and prosperous future. “City Empires”—similar to games like
“Sim City” and “The Sims,” but without the pretty pictures—takes place in a
world reborn. Set on Earth many years after the fall of bureaucracy, you have
been given the title of Mayor, and charged with rebuilding civilisation,
starting with a city.

You begin playing with
$75,000, and are first asked to build Infrastructure as it (apparently) attracts
civilians to your city. If I had known then what I do now (that civilians are
little more that whining idiots that request more than they need, and never give
me even a second’s peace) then I would have likely given up right there and
then. But ignorant to the needs of people, I built them an Infrastructure, and
in they came. Seconds later they were screaming at me from all angles. Power,
Water, Garbage, Military, Recreation—they wanted it all, and I was the guy
tasked with giving it to them.
Navigating the text-only screens was
considerably easier than I had expected it might be, and after only a few
minutes I had discovered that I could provide these things with the simple click
of a mouse, and the brain-power of an African squirrel. A few clicks of the
mouse later and I had settled the needs of the people, and was on my way to
glory and riches, and power unknown. Then I saw my income. $8,000 a day.
“What!?” I cried to the heavens, like my citizens before me. “I just spent
$70,000!”

As for addictiveness, we might have not played the game for a
very long time but it is obvious that it has to do with two factors. The first
factor has to do with player type. If you like mafia games and have played other
mafia games in the past, it is sure that you will like City Empires a lot as its
features can withstand the competition. The second factor has to do with the
fact that many features of the game are locked to non-paying members. This means
that people who do not want/cannot pay, will find City Empires uninteresting.
It worked, as I imagined
it would, and before long I was the proud owner of a city; and after some time a
country (guild) too. But really, what’s the point? There isn’t one, as far as I
can tell. The entire game is a series of pointless clicking, enraging whining,
and with little to no benefit whatsoever. In total, there were 59 other players
online at the same time as me and I finally decided that I had had enough.
It’s free, it’s simple, and if you’ve always wanted to run your own city
it might just be the game for you. Otherwise, steer clear of this one. There
isn’t really much to see.
