Astro Empires is a free online web-based game created by Nuno Rosrio. Astro Empires is completely web based, meaning there are no animations or sound effects. While this may appear to make the game relatively boring or overly simplistic, it employs other effects to keep the gamer's interest.

To start off, you have a single planet. After building up a few buildings to provide research to obtain Outpost Ships, you then build up some Shipyards to build the Outpost Ships. These ships are then used to explore and colonize other planets, although each new planet costs Credits to habituate. While early planets are extremely cheap, each new planet costs twice as much as the first planet, making it difficult after 10 or more planets to obtain another new planet.

Since each of the 3 main aspects of the game (Economy, Fleet, and Research) tie in with one another, you may want to designate certain planets to produce certain results, as each planet has a limited amount of space to build on (which can be increased after researching abilities such as Terraforming or Multilevel Platforms). You could have one planet doing nothing but Research with another brining in Credits and Ships.

Of course, all this building needs a populace to work it, right? Each planet uses Population to work in the buildings you build, so you have to give them places to live. Urban Centers give you a certain amount of population, depending on how habitable the planet is (Earth-like planets give a 7 population, while Asteroids only give 4). Each building you build (with a few exceptions) use 1 population to maintain.

Lastly, though, you have to actually get resources to build these buildings. While each new planet starts you off with some resources, you build things such a Refineries to obtain more resources. Resources in the game are depicted by "Credits Per Hour". For example, if you build a building that costs you 100 credits, and you have Refineries that can produce 50 credits per minute, it will take 2 minutes to build that building.

This game is best as a "time spender", something to maybe relax to at night or to waste some time while you're waiting for something. Overall, it is still a fun, partially addicting game.
