From Don-Loco's Hattrick Newbie Guide (obenholtsminde.dk)

Welcome to Don-Loco's newbieguide to the world of Hattrick. Here I will guide you through the first crucial steps of your career as a Hattrick manager.

What I present is one way to getting started, not the only way! There are many different approaches to the game, and some people might believe, that what I suggest isn't the best way. They may even be right. But I can assure you, that following this guide, will help you to avoid many of the most common mistakes, that are made by a lot of new managers.

The first thing to do, is to read the manual - preferrably twice... Then return to this site and follow the guide step by step. It might be a good idea, to browse through this manual before you actually decide if you want to follow the guide or not, as what I suggest have long term effects on the future of your team...

At the end of some sections of this guide, you'll find some usefull links to sites concerning that specific subject for a more indebt analysis. Good luck with your career as a Hattrick Manager!

Community

One of the great things about Hattrick is the thriving community that has been created around the game. With more than half a million of active players, you'll find a huge range of websites and other things concerning the game. You are likely to find out that a lot of people around you are fellow Hattrick'ers.

I recommend to visit the conferences often, as you'll find answers to questions you never thought of asking. You'll get to know other players, and eventually build friendships. Read the conference rules before posting, as you might get fined or even banned from the game if you brake them. In my oppinion, the community is one of the main reason that Hattrick is as addictive as it is.

Your Squad

Most managers get a sad look in their eyes as they see their squad for the first time. A few managers has even been known to cry... The 18 players you start out with has very llittle talent. But don't despair: It's pretty much the same for all new managers, and it lleaves a lot of room for improvement ;-)

If you have one or two players with solid in a main skill, you're well off. If they'er young, iit's even better. If a player is inadequate og higher in a main skill, he's likely to be a usefull teammember in the teams first season. Main skills are: Playmaking, Defending, Scoring, Keeper and Winger. I'll not go further into how the different skills affect the players performance, that is explained very well in the manual.

You'll need to strengthen the squad, but we'll get back to this later. First of all, it's time decide the training.

Skills

One of the key elements of Hattrick is to know what kind of skills are usefull for the different positions on the field. The table below gives an idea about the best way to position your players. Note that if a player playes in a position where he makes use of his playmaking skill, he'll also need stamina to use this skill at it's full potentional.

Training

Training is one of the most important aspects of Hattrick, as it is through training you improve the skills of your players, which in the end allows you to sell them for a huge profit. Training takes time - expect to stick to one type of training for at least a couple of seasons. Some stick to one type of training their whole career...

There are certain things to take into consideration, before you decide what to train. Mainly you'll need players worth training: Theres no point in training goalscoring, if your strikers have miserable goalscoring skills (below inadequate) or are older than 25. In generel you shouldn't train any players for a profit if they are older than 21. Second: What you train affects your lineup (ex. if you train defending you will have to play with 3 central defenders and two wing backs, to enjoy the full benefits).

I recommend that you start out by training Keeping, as it gives the opportunity to play the powerfull 3-5-2 lineup and has a very low startup-cost. If you have young players 17 or 18 with high skills, you might consider the training type of their main skill. A young goalkeeper needs approx. seven weeks to gain one skill level with an inadequate trainer. A passable 19 (even 18) year old keeper can be aquired for less than 30.000 Euro. After two seasons of training, your keeper will have reached Outstanding, and you'll be able to sell each for around 1.500.000 - 2.000.000. A quite good profit... I recommend that you hire an inadequeate trainer with inadequate leadership abilities or even better a passable/poor coach. This is done under your training section, and costs 41.200 Euro for the Inadequate/Inaddequate or 79.600 for the Passable/Poor.

Be warned! This is a much debated issue. In my oppinion, you'll end up with the same results, no matter what type of training you choose. My point is, that you'll only need to buy two players to get a good basis for your training, as you can only train two keepers at a time. But check out the link below before you make the final desicion. It would also be usefull to browse the current prices on the transfer market.

Economy

Handling your economy is extremely important. You start out with 300.000 Euro, a fair amount of money, but it wont get you far in Hattrick. My advice is never to get into debt, especially in the beginning, where your income basis is limited! The interest rate is high, and debts will therefore slow your progress in the game. I recommend that you keep 50.000 on your account at all times during the first few weeks.

So far you might have spent money at: 2 Goalkeepers (60.000) and one trainer (40.000). That leaves around 200.000 to strenghten your squad.
